  • - By compiling a cost-effective mitigation portfolio, TC+ES took the first company Climate Neutral™.

As GHG mitigation policy continues to evolve, an increasing number of companies are moving from identification of their potential risk exposure to the climate change issue, to identification and pursuit of opportunities presented by the developing market. With opinion polls consistently identifying climate change as a top environmental issue, the consumer-products sector is beginning to enter the mitigation market.

In 2000, Shaklee Corp. became the first to achieve “climate neutral” enterprise certification through the Climate Neutral Network (CNN). The certification indicates that CNN has concluded that the company’s operations have a net zero impact on climate change.

CNN required that Shaklee take responsibility for not only direct emissions, but also several categories of indirect emissions such as airline travel, employee commuter miles, and transportation of products from manufacturing centers to end-use consumers. TC+ES developed the footprint for Shaklee through the creation of tools and conversion factors to quantify the emissions. Additionally, CNN required consideration of internal emission reduction opportunities.
