Building Mitigation Portfolios Many companies are thinking about building GHG project mitigation portfolios, for reasons ranging from long-term risk management to near-term public relations and facility siting objectives. TC+ES can support the building of mitigation portfolios that will serve a company well over time, even in the face of today's confusing GHG market. TC+ES's portfolio services fall into two categories: Portfolio design and evaluation. TC+ES's Cli-Mit GHG Business Planning Model© is a specialized tool designed for exactly this purpose. It can bring together the different project and financial elements of a corporate portfolio strategy and express it as a single NPV figure, supported by profit and loss statements and balance sheets. Different portfolio strategies can easily be compared on the basis of their likely performance. Portfolio building. Opportunities for corporate CO2 and other greenhouse gas reductions and offsets are diverse. TC+ES tracks domestic and international carbon offset project opportunities and maintains relationships with leading energy, methane, and forestry firms capable of supplying high-quality emissions reductions to TC+ES clients. Because of the "buyer beware" nature of today's market, TC+ES selects projects to meet rigorous criteria relating to project quality, long-term integrity, regulatory credibility, and cost-effectiveness. A few examples of TC+ES's portfolio work include: In Oregon's 1996 carbon offset contested case proceeding, TC+ES designed a four-project, $3 million GHG portfolio for the City of Klamath Falls. Regulators and environmentalists alike deemed the TC+ES portfolio to be the winning portfolio in the proceeding. The offset projects are now being implemented. For a European client's facility siting application for a new natural-gas power plant, TC+ES constructed alternative portfolios intended to cover a 50 million ton CO2 liability. The analysis showed how different portfolios options would affect the public perception, credibility, cost, and benefit timing of the portfolio. For a client going through the Climate Neutral Network certification process, TC+ES successfully constructed a portfolio with local and international offsets, ranging from energy efficiency to coalbed methane recovery to solar rural electrification. The portfolio was approved in a first-of-its-kind review process. Because one portfolio does not "fit all" in today's policy environment, TC+ES's portfolio work is matched to its clients' objectives. |
