Forestry's Role in Corporate GHG Portfolios

General Forestry Report

Forestry projects have long been a popular climate change mitigation choice for companies around the world. TC+ES's Dr. Mark C. Trexler developed the quantification and monitoring methodology for the first forestry mitigation project, undertaken by AES Corp. in 1989. Since then, dozens of forestry mitigation projects have been undertaken for climate change. TC+ES has worked on forestry projects in the United States and Latin America, and is widely recognized for its expertise in the use of forestry for climate change mitigation.

Today, forestry and land-use based climate change mitigation options represent just one of many mitigation sectors. There are numerous possible project activities within forestry and land-use change. However, forestry and land-use based projects compete with other mitigation options for funding in a competitive project marketplace. Companies interested in forestry must ask what role forestry and land-use projects should play in their mitigation portfolios.

Forestry and land-use projects vary widely. Thus, it important for companies to have a good understanding of the advantages, disadvantages, and potential risks of forestry-sector investments in the context of developing corporate strategy. TC+ES's report provides companies with that understanding, based on TC+ES's 35 years of experience working with forestry and land-use projects and policy for climate change mitigation.
